Interesting Facts About Your Baby’s Sleep

1. Babies Too Take Time Falling Asleep

Like most adults, babies don’t fall asleep easily. They take about 20 minutes to settle into a deep slumber. Parents often wonder why little babies suddenly wake up and start crying right after they have just been put to bed. In the first 20 minutes they are still in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and cry because they have woken up by any sort of disturbance when they are just about falling asleep.

 

2. Why babies sleep light

Although an amazing fact about sleep, it may come as a surprise but the light sleeping pattern in babies is actually the body’s way of telling the baby that he should eat something. Babies suddenly wake up from their sleep to get all the nutrients and sustenance their bodies need.

 

3. Sleep is important for brain development

Getting a healthy dose of sleep helps in increasing brain tissues also known as ‘grey matter’. When the baby is sleeping, brain cell connections are made and an essential layer of fat called myelin is formed around nerve fibers. The connection between the left and right hemispheres of the brain are also enhanced during sleep time. All of these help the baby in critical and lateral thinking, increased language capabilities and longer attention span.

 

4. Your baby spends most of his sleeping in the womb

A pregnant woman might start feeling her baby’s movements by the 16th week and other more purposeful movements in the weeks to come. Although it may feel like the baby is active and kicking his legs around wildly, do not be fooled as the baby spends most of his time sleeping. By the 32nd week, a baby will be sleeping for close to 90% of the time.

 

5. A baby’s sleep cycle is quite short

Most infant sleep cycles last for only about an hour as they spend most of their sleep time in REM sleep. This means that they are likely to wake up every hour and even the slightest of noises could disturb their sleep. Placing a hand on the back or singing them a lullaby can help them go back to sleep.

 

6. Babies need to be taught how to sleep

Although babies spend the majority of their time in the womb sleeping and also sleeping close to 17 hours a day in their initial months, it doesn’t mean that they automatically know how to fall asleep. They need you to teach them the difference between day and night and when is good time to go to bed.
